  • Networking

The campus network extends to most buildings on all campuses, and ITS can provide 1G (wired) network connections to most locations at Einstein, Cardozo, and Stern campuses. In all cases, 100Mb (wired) connections are feasible.

Wireless is available to registered users and guest access is also available.

The campus network is a part of the Internet and most systems are considered "directly" on the Internet and are not behind any firewalls. As a direct result, all systems must have current operating systems, and must have antivirus software installed.

    ResNet

ResNet is the residential portion of the campus network. Although the configuration of systems differs from ALNET systems, functionally there are very few differences between the networks. Connections to Resnet are possible from any room in the 1925, 1935, or 1945 buildings, but from nowhere else. The Rhinelander residence complex is not wired for network access.

Requesting an ALNET connection: go to the Service Requests page.

What It Costs to Use ALNET

Installation Cost: There is a one-time Engineering charge to install cabling to your office or lab if needed. If there is an existing outlet that can be activated, then there is no charge.

Annual Access Fees: The annual access fees are being reviewed and revised by the Business Affairs office.

What It Costs to Use ResNet

There is currently no setup fee as the College has decided to allow students to self-install their computer onto ResNet at this time, however, this policy may change without notice. However, students need to purchase and install their own network cards if needed.

Students on the medical school roster pay a separate fee that is included with the tuition bill. All others who are not currently on the medical school roster and are directly affiliated with Einstein (no family members) must sign a request form and will be billed $22.50 per month, which will be added to your monthly rent statement.

    Network Operation and Support

The ITS departmental office for Technology and Network Operations is located in Belfer 1107. The telephone number for network technical help (also the Help Desk) is #6123 (HelpDesk@yu.edu).

    Assistance With Your Computer

It is anticipated that student users will be responsible for the functional integrity and technical support of their own computers, and researchers for the proper operation of any local networks they may choose to build within their labs or offices, and for installation and operation of any software they obtain from sources other than ITS.
